In the already ongoing project ”Haiku”, a dog is being trained to sense the smell of foxes being on the heat, and the smell of wet mink kits. The time when foxes are in oestrus can be stressful for the animal, and time-consuming for the farmer. If it’s possible to train dogs to do this job reliably, it would improve the animals’ well-being and save the farmer valuable time. Same goes for locating wet kits. Eeva Ojala has already started the training of her dog Haiku (75% Finnish Lapphund and 25% Elkhound) at Pohjois-Savon kansanopisto. The method is already being succesfully used on cattles. Haiku already spends time regularly at Luovas test farm.
